Mexiko: Local transmitted malaria cases in Oaxaca
In Oaxaca, an increase in autochthonous malaria cases was detected, rising from 3 in 2023 to 11 in 2024, in addition to 88 imported cases. Nationally, an increase in cases was observed, with 576 in 2024, representing a 92.6% increase compared to 2023. San Pedro Tapanatepec, Oaxaca, is a municipality with recurrent local transmission.
Portugal: EuroPride events 2025 - joint public health advice*
The EuroPride 2025 will take place from 14 to 22 June 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal. The event is expected to draw around 200’000 people, with more than 60% travelling from abroad.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe), and Portugal’s Direção-Geral da Saúde (DGS) have together issued health advice for people attending the events, see LINK.
Germany: A festival becomes source of measles infections with spread across Europe
A recent measles outbreak in Bavaria (district of Freuying-Grafenau) has been linked to an international festival, resulting in at least 18 confirmed cases, both locally and across four other European countries (Poland, Italy, Czeck Republic, and UK).
Spain: Tourist dies of rabies 10 months after dog bite in Ethiopia
On 06 Jun 2025, Spain reported a fatal case of human rabies in a 44-year-old male resident of the Valencian Community.
The patient had been bitten on the right leg by a dog during a trip to Ethiopia in July 2024. He cleaned the wound but did not seek medical attention or receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Approximately ten months later, he developed nonspecific symptoms, including fever, nausea, and mood changes. These progressed to hydrophobia, leading to a clinical suspicion of rabies. Despite intensive care, he died on 06 Jun 2025.
Spain, including its peninsular territory and islands, has been officially free of terrestrial rabies since 1978, with the exception of an isolated case in June 2013 involving a dog imported from Morocco. However, sporadic imported cases of rabies continue to be reported in the Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla, primarily involving dogs (four rabies dogs between April to June 2025) and occasionally horses.
Malaria prevention recommendations for travellers – update 2025
The Swiss Expert Committee on Travel Medicine (ECTM), in collaboration with malaria expert groups from four other countries, has updated its recommendations on malaria prevention. These partner groups include: Germany’s Ständiger Ausschuss Reisemedizin (StAR) of the German Society for Tropical Medicine, Travel Medicine and Global Health; the Belgian Study Group for Travel Medicine; the Netherlands’ National Coordination Centre for Traveller’s Health Advice (LCR); and Austria’s Österreichische Gesellschaft für Tropenmedizin, Parasitologie und Migrationsmedizin (ÖGTPM).
The 2025 updates (including written country-specific information and maps) focus on countries in Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Updates were also made for Guyana and Belize due to a marked increase in local malaria incidence. For details on the methodology, see publication.
Please note:

Kenya: Chikungunya outbreak in Mombasa country declared; Madagascar, Maurice: Chikungunya cases among returning travelers; Mayotte: Epidemic phase of chikungunya declared; La Réunion: Outbreak - update
Kenya: Media report that Mombasa County has confirmed a chikungunya outbreak, with 25 of 45 suspected cases testing positive at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). The outbreak follows heavy rains that likely boosted mosquito breeding.
Madagascar: At least 13 confirmed travel-associated cases have been imported to European countries: Four cases were confirmed in Florence, Italy, all linked to recent travel to Madagascar. The patients, part of a group of six adults, developed symptoms (arthralgia and fever, one had a rash) between 23–30 May 2025 and tested PCR-positive on 3 June 2025. In addition, chikungunya case were recently confirmed in travelers returning from Madagascar in France (n=6), Brescia, Italy (n=1), Basel, Switzerland (n=1), Antwerp, Belgium (n=1). All of these cases were seen in late May or beginning of June.
Maurice: according to health authorities, in May 5 cases were imported from Maurice.
Mayotte: Mayotte has officially entered the epidemic phase for chikungunya, prompting the activation of Phase 3 of the ORSEC (Civil Security Response Organization) arbovirus response plan on 27 May 2025. From week 10 (3 March) to week 21, 560 cases were confirmed, including 204 in week 21—a 42% rise from the previous week. Imported cases to France have been reported among 5 returning travelers.
La Réunion: The chikungunya epidemic on Réunion Island is in a declining phase but the virus continues to circulate actively. Despite this trend, the outbreak remains significant, particularly among vulnerable groups such as infants, older adults, and those with comorbidities.
Of note: Chikungunya is endemic in most tropical and subtropical countries, even if not explicitly shown on this map.

Australia: Locally transmitted case of malaria in Torres Strait Islands
Health officials are investigating two locally acquired malaria cases on Torres Strait Island, likely caused by mosquito-borne transmission from Papua New Guinea. These are the first local cases in 2025, contributing to 71 malaria notifications in Queensland—more than double the 2020–2024 annual average of 33. Although most of 2025 cases were imported, mainly from PNG and the Solomon Islands, mosquito species capable of local transmission are present in northern Queensland and the Torres Strait.

In 2025, 92 % of the confirmed cases (961 of 1046) are associated to 14 outbreaks.
Europe: Multi-country hepatitis A outbreak
Several countries in the European Union have observed an increase in reported cases of hepatis A genotype 1B. In particular, Austria, Czechia and Hungary have observed more reported cases than expected between November 2024 to May 2025.
The increase of HAV infection is mainly affecting adults that are experiencing homeless, people with a drug addiction and people living in poor sanitary conditions. Two genetically closely related clusters of HAV 1b have been identified (cluster a and cluster b).
